Magic Bullet
The title of this exhibition, ‘Magic Bullet’, suggests a magical solution or cure. To mark the end of the Master of Arts Fine Arts programme, the idea extends beyond both the meanings of either an easy solution to a difficult problem, or as a therapeutic agent in medicine. ‘Magic Bullet’ is closer to the artists’ attempts at resolution (albeit temporarily) providing some form of magical alternative where potentials and possibilities are transformed through their research practice.
Exhibiting artists:
Erika Norris, Jying Tan, and Phuong Dang.

Linking Drinking with Thinking
Opening Reception: 18:30, Nov 7, 2012
Duration: Nov 8-16, 2012
‘Linking Drinking with Thinking’ is the motto of Plato’s Cave, a fictive bar created as part of Peter Hill’s project, ‘Museum of Contemporary Ideas’. The motto serves as an inspiration for this halfway-point exhibition by candidates from the MA Fine Arts programme. It also suggests a creative process that may not involve a separation between the visceral and the body, as the mind is put to task in working out ideas, and in taking risks. In this exhibition, studio practice works are presented as part of these candidates’ practice-as-research trajectories as they negotiate their own boundaries and permutations in relationship to their bodies, the gaze, and actions within the artmaking process.
Participating artists:
Erika Norris
Jying Tan
Phuong Dang

This exhibition showcases the continuous development and new explorations in contemporary Chinese-ink painting today. Chinese-ink paintings are based on the artist’s perceptual understanding of visual impressions, and conceptual manipulation of the medium. The exhibition shows both recent work of Lim Choon Jin and 15 of his student artists of ink painting. The selection of work by Lim in ICA Gallery 2 begins from 2004 up until 2011 while, ICA Gallery 1 includes a selection of work produced by his student artists over the past year. (De)Part

What: (De)part
Who: Jack Ying
Opening: Thu 3 Mar, 6.30pm
When: Fri 4 Mar - Wed 23 Mar, 10am - 6pm, closed on Monday & Public Holidays
Where: TriSpace, B1-05, LASALLE
Type: Free (De)part is an extension of the project of Shifting (Re)Iteration II shown in Alliance Francaise de Singapour in 2009, in which Jack Ying explored the relations between home and displacement where an individual attains a sense of security; and where memories are created and intimate human relationships are built.
In this current exhibition, the artist’s investigations are drawn from The Poetics of Space by the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. In the book the author describes home as the centre of one’s world, the first universe where one exists and that every dwelling has its beauty. TriSpace becomes a symbol of a mother’s womb where every life begins, an intimate space in which relations between the mother and child are formed and a shelter of protection where memories begin. Fabrics are sewn together with hair creating a sense of intimate and personal space. Hair is an intimate yet identical substance of the human body; it is rooted to our heads, similar to that of our home. As much as hair can be intimate, we find hair distasteful as well. Thus, when one enters that space it might be unpleasant for one to get in contact with the hair at once; making the space intimate to oneself; a home that is distinguished from others. The sensual can be repulsive and hence creates an unpleasant alienated feeling for the person who enters that space

Madam Warsih lives on the wrong side of Jakarta’s rich Pondok Surya neighbourhood that she visits almost every day to pick trash for a living. Her life, largely untouched by six decades of economic development, contributes to a sustainable way of living that helps to reduce the use of the Earth’s natural resources. The Sustainable Shop, an exhibition about sustainable development, invites you to a conversation about people, plac...es, livelihood, subsistence, sustainability and enterprise. The exhibition adopts three SMU community engagement projects to present the subject of sustainable development. The student-led-and-organised teams supported by SMU’s Office of Student Life are: an ecotourism project in a fishing village in Konleng Phe, Cambodia; an economic self-reliance enterprise for the urban poor in Jakarta, Indonesia; and a village paper-making cooperative in Sikkim, India.
In collaboration with LASALLE College of the Arts, on sale are works created by artists from Faculty of Fine Arts and designers from the Product Design and Design Communication programme, as well as, from social entrepreneurs, which respond to the various themes of sustainable development.
The Sustainable Shop commemorates Singapore Management University’s 10th anniversary, and is organised by the Office of Student Life, together with student teams from its Community Engagement projects.

Exhibition: D Minor

Date: Thursday, August 20, 2009
Time: 6:30pm - 10:00pm
Location: POST MUSEUM, 107+109 ROWELL ROAD
Street: ROWELL ROAD
When it comes to art, we talk about so many things, for example, light, composition, balance, etc. The huge size of the individual artworks of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has been commented frequently, the implications of scale itself as a crucial element of pictorial expression in art making in general is quite often
been ignored.
Of course, it very much depends on what the artist is trying to communicate too. However we are more interested to find out to what extend does the size of the art has any impact on the audience.
Do we perceive big things in the same way we do in small things?
Does A Hundred Whispers Equal To A Shout?
D.Minor is proud to showcase over 3000 mini drawings (and I mean it..really mini!) from 9 artists. They are:
Erzan Adam, Rudy Djoharnaen, Bridget Haworth, Lim Bee Ling, James Lee, Urich Lau Wai-Yuen, Wei Xin, Betty Susiarjo and Jack Ying.
Curators: Erzan Adam and Rudy Djoharnaen
Time: 6:30pm - 10:00pm
